Class
Psychologist
Updated:
Doubles every sanity event — gains and losses both. 100% starting sanity. High-variance class for skilled players.
Overview
Psychologist is the highest-variance class in the roster, priced at 500 Animal Coins from the lobby shop. The class passive doubles every sanity-related effect in both directions — Coffee gives twice as much, treatment-procs give twice as much, but Stalker glances cost twice as much, Mass of Eyes drains twice as fast, and Head Banger's manual dismissal scales from 20 sanity to 40. The trade is uniform: skilled players who minimize mistakes get amplified rewards; sloppy play gets amplified punishment.
The class also opens at 100% starting sanity, which is the highest baseline in the game. That ceiling matters because the doubled-drain effect erodes it faster — but it also means a clean Psychologist shift can ride a much larger sanity buffer through the late game. Visually, Psychologist is a green bunny-like creature with upturned ears, dark green shirt, brown pants, and oversized brown glasses; the prominent black mustache is the same model element as Barney (NPC) and is the visual link players use to identify the class at a glance.

Class Abilities
- All tiers: All sanity changes are doubled — positive (gains) and negative (losses) both scale 2×
- All tiers: Begins each shift at 100% sanity (the highest starting baseline in the roster)
- All tiers: Passive sanity gain from treating patients, checked-in patients, and consuming Coffee — all 2× scaled
- Cosmetic: Psycho-themed skin available (one of six classes with documented skins as of 2026-06-26)
Pros & Cons
Pros
- ✓ 100% starting sanity gives the largest opening buffer of any class
- ✓ Doubled positive sanity effects make Coffee and rest spots dramatically more efficient
- ✓ Has a documented cosmetic skin (Psycho-themed) — one of six classes in the skin roster
Cons
- ✗ Doubled negative sanity scaling makes every mistake 2× as expensive — Head Banger's manual dismissal jumps from 20 to 40 sanity
- ✗ High-variance: clean shifts feel overpowered, messy shifts feel impossible
- ✗ Not beginner-friendly — the amplified punishment compounds with normal learning mistakes

How to Play This Class
Optimize for sanity income and damage avoidance, in that order. Psychologist's value compounds when you stack gains (Coffee, completed treatments, sanity-restoring shop upgrades) and minimize drains (Stalker glances, Mass of Eyes uptime, monster contact). A clean shift can ride 100% sanity through the late game; a sloppy shift bottoms out faster than any other class.
Coffee is the strongest synergy item. Every Coffee sip restores doubled sanity, which makes the Psychologist effectively the most efficient Coffee user in the game. Stockpile Coffee from supplies and time consumption around expected drain spikes (just before a Mass of Eyes encounter, just before a Skinwalker fight).
Avoid Head Banger encounters at all cost. The manual-dismissal penalty doubles from 20 sanity to 40 — Psychologist takes the worst Head Banger penalty in the entire class roster. If Head Banger is in the queue, either let the window break naturally (60 seconds, cosmetic damage only) or hand it Coffee with two pre-sips (the Coffee gift cost stays at 5 sanity even on Psychologist).
Level up priority: there's no tier improvement on the doubled-sanity passive itself — the rework adds upgrade tiers but Psychologist's core mechanic is fixed. Spend coins on shop upgrades that increase sanity-gain rate (NPC Sanity, rest spots) before spending on additional class upgrades.
Team role: Psychologist is the sanity battery in coordinated lobbies. Pair with a Secretary (intake income) so you can stay parked in low-drain zones, plus a Security (combat coverage) so you don't have to absorb hostile encounter damage. Solo Psychologist is high-skill and high-reward — only do it on shifts where you can guarantee low mistake rate.
When Psychologist underperforms: chaotic emergency-heavy shifts. The doubled-drain effect compounds across stacked emergencies, and the 100% starting sanity gets eaten faster than you can recover. For those shifts, switch to a defensive class (Security, Intern Level 3 for the sanity buffer).
Patch History
Class System rework on 2026-06-19 added upgrade tiers to all classes; Psychologist's doubled-sanity passive is unchanged across tiers. The 2026-06-26 skin patch added the Psycho-themed cosmetic skin — Psychologist is one of six classes with documented skins.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Doubles every sanity change — gains AND losses. Coffee gives twice as much, Mass of Eyes drains twice as fast, Head Banger's manual dismissal jumps from 20 to 40 sanity.
- 100% — the highest starting baseline in the class roster. Combined with doubled-gain effects, this gives the largest opening sanity buffer.
- No. The doubled-loss effect compounds with normal learning mistakes — every misdiagnosis or accidental Stalker glance hurts twice as much. Start with Intern or Doctor.
- Manual dismissal of Head Banger costs 20 sanity for every other class — Psychologist's doubled-loss passive scales it to 40 sanity. Always use the Coffee bribe instead (5 sanity).
- 500 Animal Coins from the lobby's class shop. Mid-cost — accessible after the cheaper specialist unlocks.
- Yes — the Psycho-themed cosmetic skin was added in the 2026-06-26 skin patch. Psychologist is one of six classes with documented skins.
- Visual link in the lore — Psychologist's character model shares the prominent black mustache with the Barney NPC. Deliberate design echo.
- Coffee. The doubled-gain effect makes Psychologist the most efficient Coffee user in the game — stockpile from supplies and time consumption around expected drain spikes.

The high-variance class
Psychologist's perk is all sanity changes doubled — both gains and losses. Eat 5 sanity from Coffee, you actually gain 10. Take a Stalker eye-contact hit, you take double damage. The multiplier is bidirectional.
For 500 Animal Coins, you're not buying a strict upgrade — you're buying a variance amplifier. Whether it's "worth it" depends entirely on your runs' baseline mistake rate.
When it works (and when it implodes)
Psychologist works when:
- Your camera discipline is solid (no accidental Stalker / Mass of Eyes sightings).
- You catch ≥90% of anomalies at intake (few Skinwalker conversions on the floor).
- You stock sanity restoratives (Coffee + Chocolate) consistently.
Psychologist implodes when:
- You're still learning anomaly cues — every miss costs 2x.
- You're running unfamiliar shifts (especially Shift 7+ when Stalker enters rotation).
- You're in public lobbies where teammate misclicks cascade.
Why this isn't a learning class
The standard advice across multiple tier-list sources: don't pick Psychologist until you can already run cleanly without it. The class isn't a teacher; it's a force multiplier. Use it to push score on already-mastered shifts, not to grind through unfamiliar content.
A note on the +10 Intern start
Psychologist doesn't have an Intern-style +10 starting sanity bonus. Your starting sanity is baseline, and the doubling kicks in on changes (income and loss), not the starting value. The implication: the first sanity event of the shift carries disproportionate weight because you don't have an Intern-style buffer to absorb early mistakes.
