Anomaly

Unnatural Photo

Updated:

Photo-class anomaly: photo shows human teeth, uneven features, or other unnatural details absent from the live view. AH-specific catch-all.

Overview

Unnatural Photo is the AH-specific catch-all entry for photo anomalies that don't fit cleanly into the other photo-class categories (Incorrect Photo, Static Photo, Cursed Photo, Different Eyes, Different Ears). The Fandom main anomalies page doesn't have a separate entry for this — Fandom subsumes the various 'photo shows something wrong' cases under different specific anomalies. AH tracks Unnatural Photo as its own entry for cases that don't match the more specific photo anomalies.

The most common cues in this catch-all: human teeth visible in the photo of an animal patient (related to but distinct from the Human Teeth visual anomaly), facial features rendering at uneven heights (eye placement asymmetry visible only in the photo), or other anatomical wrongness that surfaces only via the Photo Camera. The sanity cost is the same 10 per view as other photo anomalies.

How to Spot It

Photo Camera is the only detection channel. Take the photo, scan for any 'wrong' detail not visible at the live window — uneven facial feature placement, unexpected human dentition, anatomical asymmetry. If anything looks off in the photo that wasn't visible at the window, reject.

This is the broadest of the photo-class anomalies because it covers cases that don't match the specific signatures of Incorrect Photo (different species/markings), Cursed Photo (bloodshot eyes + face corruption + sanity drain), Different Eyes (eye-specific), or Different Ears (CCTV-class, not photo). When in doubt about a photo that looks 'off' but doesn't match the specific signatures, default to Unnatural Photo and reject.

Sanity cost: same 10 per view as other photo anomalies.

Mechanics & Behavior

  • Detection: Photo-only (catch-all for photo wrongness not covered by other specific photo anomalies)
  • Sanity damage: 10 per photo viewing
  • Common cues: human teeth, uneven facial features, anatomical asymmetry visible only in photo
  • AH-specific entry not in Fandom's main 14 (Fandom subsumes under other categories)

Easy vs Hard Calls

Pros

  • Human teeth visible in the photo of an animal patient — distinct cue
  • Facial features placed at obviously uneven heights
  • Anatomical asymmetry that wasn't visible at the live window

Cons

  • Catch-all category — easy to confuse with more specific photo anomalies
  • Subtle asymmetries can be dismissed as render variation rather than anomaly
  • Distinguish from Different Eyes (eye-specific) and Human Teeth (visual-class window detection)

How to Handle This Anomaly

When reviewing a photo, scan the full face — not just one specific region. Unnatural Photo can surface anywhere on the patient's anatomy (teeth, feature placement, asymmetry). If any detail reads as 'wrong' compared to the live window, reject.

Distinguish from the more specific photo anomalies: Incorrect Photo (different species/markings), Cursed Photo (bloodshot eyes + sanity drain), Different Eyes (eye-specific). When in doubt about a photo that's 'off' but doesn't match these specific signatures, Unnatural Photo is the default classification — and the response is the same regardless (reject).

If admitted, transforms into a Skinwalker on the hospital floor. See /wiki/enemies/skinwalker for combat counter.

Cross-reference: Human Teeth is the visual-class window-detection anomaly for the same dental cue. If you spot human teeth at the window directly, that's Human Teeth. If you only see them in the photo, that's Unnatural Photo with the human-teeth variant.

Patch History

No documented balance changes specific to Unnatural Photo. The catch-all classification has been stable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Unnatural Photo cover?
Catch-all for photo anomalies that don't match the more specific signatures (Incorrect Photo, Static Photo, Cursed Photo, Different Eyes). Common cues: human teeth, uneven facial features, anatomical asymmetry visible only via Photo Camera.
Why isn't Unnatural Photo in Fandom?
AH-specific catch-all. Fandom subsumes these cases under other specific anomaly categories. AH tracks the catch-all as its own entry for cases that don't match the specific signatures.
How is Unnatural Photo different from Different Eyes?
Different Eyes is eye-specific (pupils, eyelids, iris). Unnatural Photo is broader — covers any anatomical wrongness visible only in the photo. Different Eyes is more specific; Unnatural Photo is the catch-all.
How is Unnatural Photo different from Human Teeth?
Human Teeth is the visual-class window-detection anomaly (you see the teeth directly at the window). Unnatural Photo with the human-teeth variant means the teeth only appear in the Photo Camera output, not at the window. Same cue, different detection channels.
How much sanity does Unnatural Photo cost to detect?
10 per photo viewing — same as all other photo-class anomalies.
What happens if I admit an Unnatural Photo patient?
Transforms into a Skinwalker on the hospital floor. See /wiki/enemies/skinwalker for combat counter.
When does Unnatural Photo first appear?
Shift 1. Part of the default rotation from the opening shift.
Should I default to Unnatural Photo when the photo looks 'off' but I'm not sure?
Yes — when the photo is clearly anomalous but doesn't match the specific signatures of Incorrect Photo / Static Photo / Cursed Photo / Different Eyes, default to Unnatural Photo and reject. The response is the same regardless of exact classification.

The catch-all photo anomaly

Of the six photo-class anomalies, Unnatural Photo is the most loosely defined. Techwiser's entry pairs two specific tells under one name: human teeth visible in the photo of an animal patient, or uneven facial feature placement (eyes at different heights, jaw misaligned). Both are detected the same way, both convert to Skinwalker.

If you've already learned the Different Eyes, Different Ears, and Human Teeth entries, Unnatural Photo is essentially the catch-all for "everything else weird in the photo".

Why the human-teeth-in-photo overlap matters

Human Teeth (the standalone anomaly) is visible at the live window. Unnatural Photo's human-teeth variant is visible only in the photo. Same anatomical cue, different detection layer. The reject decision is the same, but in our wiki taxonomy these are two separate entries because the workflow for catching them differs.

If you're documenting an admit failure, check which view actually showed the cue — that tells you which entry to update.

Photo-class baseline workflow

For all six photo-class anomalies, the rule is identical:

  • Photo every queued patient (no exceptions).
  • Glance at the output for two beats.
  • Any anomaly cue = reject. Don't retake; the corruption is intentional.
