Ending

Fired / Dismissal

Updated:

Accumulate 3 strikes — Security escorts you out, Ron calls you incompetent, run ends without rewards.

Overview

Fired / Dismissal is the failure-state ending of Animal Hospital. Accumulate 3 strikes across any shifts (patient deaths from wrong treatment, missed anomalies that transformed into Skinwalkers that you couldn't handle, critical event timer expirations) and the game transitions to the Fired screen. Security escorts the player out of the building; Ron from Accounting delivers a withering 'you are incompetent' line; the player is returned to the main menu.

No achievement badge is awarded. No payroll. No permanent rewards. The Fired ending is the canonical 'try again' outcome — the run is lost but progression toward Animal Coins and class unlocks may have partially accumulated during the shifts you did complete.

Unlike the Barney-arc endings (which require active engagement with a story branch), Fired triggers passively when you hit the threshold. Most new players see this ending at least once during the learning phase — internalising the 3-strike economy is part of the game's onboarding curve.

Video Guide

Unlock Requirements

  • Accumulate 3 strikes across any single shift or across the run
  • Each patient death from wrong treatment = 1 strike
  • Critical Patient timer expirations = 1 strike per missed patient
  • Death Ritual / Monster Eating Patient timer expirations = 1 strike per failure
  • Cannot avoid this ending if you hit the threshold — it triggers automatically

Risks vs Rewards

Pros

  • Animal Coin partial accumulation from shifts completed before the dismissal (preserves some progression)
  • Lore exposure to Ron from Accounting's incompetence dialogue (one of his more direct character beats)
  • Diagnostic-discipline feedback — the failure points to what needs work

Cons

  • No Professional Caretaker achievement badge
  • No Coffee Machine reward (Hide Barney exclusive)
  • No Officer Duckman story branch (Report Barney exclusive)
  • Return to main menu — the run is fully lost, no mid-shift recovery

How to Achieve This Ending

This ending isn't usually 'aimed for' — it triggers passively when the 3-strike threshold is reached. If you're seeking it intentionally for completionist achievement-hunting reasons:

Deliberate triggers per Fandom-documented failure modes:

- Wrong-treatment any patient: per Fandom's Treatment system, wrong-treatment on a non-anomaly patient kills the patient and counts as 1 of 3 lives lost

- Miss the Patient Fainted event timer (60s): patient dies, 1 strike

- Miss the Monster Eating Patient timer (30s): patient consumed by Bed Monster, 1 strike

- Miss the Death Ritual cancel window (40-60s, source varies): patient dies on table, 1 strike

- Miss the Monster Emerging timer (45s, Room 8): patient dies, 1 strike

- Miss the Critical Patient timer (100-120s, sometimes 60s on late shifts): patient dies in lobby, 1 strike

Unintentional triggers (the normal path to Fired for new players):

- Misdiagnosis between trauma-treatment triangle (Bandages/Medkit/Ointment) — these conditions look similar and new players often confuse them

- Skipping the Photo Camera intake check — admits the photo-class anomalies that all transform to Skinwalker

- Skipping CCTV intake check — admits the camera-only anomalies

- Surgery on Mad Patient or routing patients through fires — instant fail-state cascades

New player guidance: don't aim for Fired as a deliberate achievement; instead, use it as feedback. The strike that triggered the dismissal usually points to a specific diagnostic weakness — fix that weakness on the next run.

After the Fired screen, you return to the main menu. Animal Coin accumulation from completed shifts is preserved; the run itself is lost.

Patch History

The 3-strike threshold and Fired ending mechanics have been stable across all 2026 updates documented through 2026-06-28. Confidence upgraded from 'uncertain' to 'verified' via Fandom cross-reference of the Treatment system documentation (which confirms the wrong-treatment 1-of-3-lives mechanic that drives strike accumulation).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many strikes before I get Fired?
3 strikes. Each patient death = 1 strike. Various triggers can produce a strike: wrong-treatment, missed event timer, missed critical-patient timer, admitted anomaly that you couldn't combat-resolve.
Can I recover after hitting 2 strikes?
Yes — 2 strikes is the warning state. Focus on diagnostic accuracy and avoiding event-timer failures for the rest of the shift. If you complete the shift without a third strike, the strike count carries to the next shift but doesn't escalate.
What's the difference between Fired and Standard Discharge?
Fired = 3 strikes accumulated, escorted out by security, no badge. Standard Discharge = finish all 5 shifts without hitting 3 strikes, Professional Caretaker badge awarded.
Does Fired award any progression?
Partial Animal Coin accumulation from shifts completed before dismissal is preserved. No achievement badge. No permanent gameplay rewards.
Can I get Fired during Shift 1?
Yes — if you hit 3 strikes in a single shift the dismissal triggers immediately. Common for new players who misdiagnose multiple trauma-triangle patients (Bleeding/Bruises/Rashes) in quick succession.
Does Ron's dialogue in the Fired ending change based on my mistakes?
Per AH content, Ron delivers a generic 'you are incompetent' line. No documented variation based on specific failure types — though Ron's character has wider variation in other contexts (see /wiki/npcs/ron-from-accounting).
Is there a way to undo a strike?
No — strikes are permanent for the run once accumulated. The only path forward is to avoid further strikes and aim for Standard Discharge by Shift 5.
When was the Fired ending added?
Present since the 2026-05-10 launch. Core ending mechanic; stable across all updates.
