Ending
Standard Discharge
Updated:
Successfully finish all 5 shifts — Ron from Accounting thanks you, you get the Professional Caretaker badge.
Overview
Standard Discharge is the canonical completion ending of Animal Hospital — finish all 5 shifts without hitting the 3-strike threshold and the game ends with Ron from Accounting officially thanking you for your service. The hospital is shown clean and free of anomalies in the closing sequence; the payroll check is the player's reward; and the Professional Caretaker achievement badge is awarded as the formal completion marker.
This ending is the baseline 'success' path that every run is implicitly targeting. It doesn't require any specific choices or moral branching — just consistent diagnostic discipline across all 5 shifts. The Shift 4 Ambulance Event (see /wiki/events/ambulance-event) is the main difficulty spike on the path to this ending; once you can reliably handle that 6-patient surge, Standard Discharge becomes the default outcome.
The Professional Caretaker badge is the canonical 'you completed the game' marker. Other endings (Fired, Barney-arc) award their own lore content but don't grant this badge.

Risks vs Rewards
Pros
- ✓ Professional Caretaker achievement badge (canonical completion marker)
- ✓ Standard payroll check (in-fiction reward via Ron from Accounting)
- ✓ Hospital ending screen showing clean, anomaly-free state
- ✓ Run counts toward overall progression and class unlocks
Cons
- ✗ No Coffee Machine reward — that's exclusive to the Hide Barney ending
- ✗ No Officer Duckman lore content (he only appears in the Barney arc)
- ✗ No Shadow experiment lore trigger (only Ratthew's dialogue surfaces this thread)
- ✗ Standard Discharge is the 'safe' ending — players seeking branching content may find it incomplete

How to Achieve This Ending
Plan across all 5 shifts with sustainable sanity and diagnostic discipline as the primary objectives.
Shift 1: build diagnostic foundation. The first 2 patients always require Herbs (Stomach Ache) and Eye Drops (Dried Eyes) per Fandom — pre-stage both items for guaranteed clean starts. Use the rest of the shift to internalise the visual cues for the trauma-treatment triangle (Bandages/Medkit/Ointment).
Shift 2-3: expand the diagnostic surface. New conditions appear; new anomalies become possible. The Photo Camera intake check costs 10 sanity per view but catches the entire photo-class anomaly category — discipline pays back across the run. Supplies Shop opens at Shift 3 — buy +1 Carry Capacity ($100) and Faster Computers ($110) for broad throughput gains.
Shift 4: the difficulty spike. News Bunny's TV broadcast warns of the incoming Ambulance Event — the 6-patient surge is the highest-pressure event in the game outside of the Barney arc. Triage burning patients first, then Critical Patient timer cases, then stable admissions. The bonus cash on successful completion helps fund Shift 5 prep.
Shift 5: the closing shift. Apply everything learned. Avoid the 3-strike threshold (any patient death = 1 strike). The shift ends with Ron from Accounting's thank-you sequence and the Professional Caretaker badge unlock.
For sustainability across the run: pair a sanity-income class (Doctor, Secretary, Psychologist) with a combat-capable backup option (Taser from Reception Office at Shift 3+) for hostile encounters. The Shift 4 Ambulance Event is where unprepared players fail; the rest of the path is straightforward once Shift 4 is under control.
Patch History
Standard ending mechanic and the Professional Caretaker badge unlock have been stable across all 2026 updates documented through 2026-06-28. The Shift 5 5-shift run length and 3-strike threshold are core game-loop fundamentals that haven't been adjusted.
Frequently Asked Questions
- The canonical 'you completed the game' achievement badge. Awarded only on Standard Discharge — Fired and Barney-arc endings don't grant this badge.
- All 5 shifts without being fired. The 3-strike threshold is the failure condition; any patient death counts as 1 strike.
- Shift 4 — the Ambulance Event surge of 6 patients near-simultaneously. The first Ambulance is the difficulty spike; later ones (Shift 9, 14, 19 in extended runs) carry progressively more critical patients.
- No — the Barney-arc endings (Hide Barney / Report Barney) are story-branching choices that fire during their own encounter sequence. Standard Discharge is the default outcome when Barney's arc doesn't trigger or you don't engage with it. The two ending categories are effectively independent.
- The badge is the primary reward. The run counts toward overall progression (Animal Coins, class unlocks) but no permanent gameplay-affecting upgrade is tied to this ending specifically. The Hide Barney ending unlocks the Coffee Machine — Standard Discharge does not.
- Sustain-focused classes — Doctor (per-cure sanity), Secretary (per-check-in sanity), Surgeon (per-cure sanity + speed). These build sanity income that absorbs the cumulative drain across 5 shifts. Combat classes (Security, Secret Agent) are useful but not required for the standard path.
- Yes, up to the 3-strike threshold. Each patient death is 1 strike; lose 3 and you transition to the Fired ending. Plan around the threshold rather than aiming for perfection.
- Present since the 2026-05-10 launch. Core ending mechanic; stable across all updates.
