Coffee

Updated:

Sanity restorative — 5% per sip, 3 sips per cup, 15% total recovery. Cheapest and most accessible sanity item in the game.

Overview

Coffee is the most accessible sanity-recovery item in the game. Per Fandom, it restores 5% sanity per sip with a 3-sip cap per cup — that's 15% total recovery per consumed cup. There are two acquisition channels: the Supplies Shop sells a shop variant for $55 (effectively the same as Coffee but treated as a 'Recovers 15 Sanity' line item), and the Reception Coffee Machine produces cups for free with a 180-second brew time (the Large Coffee Machine produces cups with a 300-second brew time but is otherwise functionally identical — one cup per machine cycle).

NPCs occasionally request coffee, and per Fandom a partial cup (a cup that has been sipped from) counts as valid for the request. This makes pre-sipping a cup for personal sanity gain before handing it over to an NPC a documented optimization. The Hide-Barney ending in the storyline unlocks an additional permanent Coffee Machine with a 300-second cooldown that you keep across all subsequent runs — see /wiki/npcs/barney for the ending-choice consequences.

Effect & Mechanics

  • Sanity recovery: 5% per sip, 3 sips maximum per cup
  • Total recovery per cup: 15% sanity
  • Brew time: 180 seconds (Standard machine), 300 seconds (Large machine)
  • One cup output per machine brew cycle
  • Partial cups count as valid when NPCs request coffee
  • Direct application: ends a Head Banger encounter at the check-in window

When to Use vs Skip

Pros

  • Mid-shift sanity drops (post-Mass-of-Eyes, post-Stalker, post-Cursed Photo)
  • When Head Banger appears at the second check-in window (Coffee bribe = cheapest counter)
  • Pre-sip then hand to NPC for double-value usage

Cons

  • Sanity is already above 80% — the 5% per sip is diminishing returns near the cap
  • Chocolate is in inventory and you need raw recovery efficiency (Chocolate is 4× more potent per use)
  • Brew timer would make the Coffee Machine unavailable for a Head Banger encounter you can predict

How to Use This Item

Pick up a Coffee cup from the Reception Coffee Machine (free) or buy the shop variant at Supplies Shop ($55) post-Shift 3. Sip by interacting with the cup in your inventory — each sip is a discrete action that recovers 5% sanity. After three sips the cup is consumed and discarded automatically.

For Head Banger counters: don't sip first; bring the full cup to the second check-in window and hand it over. Head Banger accepts the coffee and walks away. If sanity budget is tight, the documented optimization is to pre-sip twice (gain 10% sanity yourself) before handing the cup over — Head Banger still accepts the partial cup. This drops the encounter cost from 0 sanity to -10 (you net +10 sanity).

For team play: Coffee cups can be left at the spawn area for teammates to pick up. The Intern class is specifically called out in class documentation as the ideal Coffee-share class because its starting sanity headroom can absorb the give cost while stabilising teammates with lower starting sanity.

For Psychologist class specifically, Coffee is the highest-value item in the game — the doubled-sanity passive scales the 5% per sip to 10% per sip, making each cup worth 30% total sanity recovery instead of 15%. Stockpile aggressively when playing Psychologist.

Patch History

Coffee mechanics (5% per sip, 3 sips per cup, 180/300 brew times) have been stable across all updates documented through 2026-06-28. The shop variant ('Recovers 15 Sanity' line item at $55) is listed in the supplies shop alongside the higher-recovery Chocolate variant ($120).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sanity does Coffee restore?
5% per sip, 3 sips maximum per cup, for 15% total recovery. The shop variant ('Recovers 15 Sanity' line item) is functionally equivalent.
Where can I get Coffee?
Two sources: the Coffee Machine in Reception (free, 180-second brew time) or the Supplies Shop ($55 for the shop variant) post-Shift 3. The Hide-Barney ending unlocks an additional permanent Coffee Machine.
Can I use Coffee on Head Banger?
Yes — handing a Coffee to Head Banger at the second check-in window ends the encounter immediately. The pre-sipped optimization (sip twice yourself, then hand over) nets +10 sanity for you while still resolving the encounter.
What's the brew time for Coffee Machine?
Standard machine: 180 seconds per cup. Large machine: 300 seconds per cup. One cup output per brew cycle on either.
Coffee vs Chocolate — which is better?
Chocolate is 4× more sanity-efficient per use (20% per bite vs 5% per sip). Coffee is dramatically more accessible (free from Coffee Machine, vs Robux/shop purchase for Chocolate). Use Coffee for routine recovery, Chocolate for late-shift emergencies.
Does Coffee work better for the Psychologist class?
Yes — Psychologist's doubled-sanity passive scales Coffee from 5% to 10% per sip, making each cup worth 30% total recovery. Psychologist is the highest-value Coffee user in the class roster.
Can I share Coffee with teammates?
Yes — Coffee cups can be left at the spawn area for teammates to pick up. The Intern class is specifically the best Coffee-share class because its starting sanity headroom absorbs the give cost while stabilising lower-sanity teammates.
Does a pre-sipped Coffee still satisfy NPC requests?
Yes — per Fandom, partial cups count as valid when NPCs request coffee. This enables the pre-sip optimization (sip twice for personal gain, then hand over the partial cup).

The sanity workhorse: 5 per sip, 3 sips per cup

Per the Sportskeeda items guide, Coffee restores 5 sanity per sip, up to 3 sips per cup = 15 sanity per cup total. The most accessible sanity restorative once the Supplies Shop opens at Shift 3.

For comparison: Chocolate restores 20 sanity per bite × 3 bites = 60 total per bar (4× more efficient per use). Coffee's advantage is accessibility — cheaper, more universally stocked, more situational uses.

Three documented uses, not one

  • Sanity restore — the standard use.
  • Head Banger counter — applying Coffee to the entity ends the second-check-in encounter.
  • Death Ritual cancel — one of the consumables (alongside Eye Drops and IV Drops) that wakes the affected patient.

The multi-use nature makes Coffee a high-priority carry item even on shifts where sanity isn't critically low.

The Coffee Machine ending unlock

Per the Endings catalogue, the Hide-Barney ending rewards you with a Coffee Machine — a permanent in-hospital station that produces Coffee. If you've taken that ending, the per-shift Coffee economy changes significantly: free Coffee on demand instead of shop-purchased.

This makes the Barney decision (turn in vs hide) a long-term economic choice, not just a narrative one.
